Chinese Officials Join International Food Safety Training
The first International Food Safety Administration Program jointly launched by Cargill and General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) was recently completed in Europe and the United States. During the training, the first group of sixteen Chinese government officials discussed food safety administration with academics, government officials and private industry from Europe and the United States. The University of Minnesota played a large role in organizing and administering the program for all of the participants.
The participants visited the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations and World Health Organization, to learn about international standards and the role of inter-governmental agencies in food safety. After the session in Europe, the delegation paid a visit to Washington, D.C.,for discussions with officials from United Sates Department of Agriculture and Food and Drug Administration to understand how food safety responsibilities from farm to table are organized in United States. The participants also toured several food-manufacturing plants in the United States to view food safety procedures. A wide range of topics were discussed, ranging from international food safety standards to animal health to public health to approaches to prevent food contamination.
AQSIQ hopes this kind of international communication and training will improve the cooperation of government officials in the area of food safety. Feedback from participants from ASQIQ, the University of Minnesota, and Cargill showed that the program expanded their knowledge on food safety, and provided them with more information about harmonizing China’s food safety system with global standards and practices.
Cargill China president Norwell Coquillard said: ” Food safety is a concern of everyone both in China and around the world. As a responsible corporate citizen in China, Cargill is very glad to share our knowledge and information of the global food system with Chinese officials, scientists and food companies through this innovative program, and to learn from them as well. Cargill strives to contribute its global experience and resources to address the challenges China faces in the food safety system and increasing farmers’ income.”
As a leading food, agriculture and risk management product and service supplier, Cargill manages more than 1200 food and animal feed facilities around the world. Cargill’s rich experience and expertise are the reasons why AQSIQ selected Cargill as their training program partner.
